Indonesian President commends Omron Manufacturing of Indonesia (OMI) as one of the best 10 “Employers of Disabled People”

Omron Manufacturing of Indonesia (OMI) was honored with an “Employer of Disabled People” Award from the Indonesian government at a ceremony held last December 7th, in conjunction with the “International Day of Disabled Persons” (December 3rd). Of the 40 predominantly local companies selected to receive this prestigious award, OMI ranked in the best 10, recognized for their recruitment policies and working conditions for disabled employees.

This was the first ever International Day of Disabled Persons celebration held in Istana Negara - the Indonesian Presidential Palace - and the President of Indonesia, Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, ambassadors, ministers, representatives from The Foundation for Disabled People (YPAC), NGOs and
OMI staff were in attendance. The President expressed his appreciation and regard for the winning companies’ efforts to promote recruitment of disabled persons and announced that this award ceremony will become an annual event at the Presidential Palace.

This recognition from the Indonesian Government bears testimony to OMI’s commitment to fulfilling its social responsibilities, and in particular, to the principle of “Not Charity but a Chance” with regards to employment of people with disabilities*.

Currently, people with disabilities comprise approximately 1% of OMI’s workforce and management aims to increase this percentage to 3% by 2010. OMI will also continue to donate tools and equipment to a vocational school for disabled people and work with the students there more closely, to support and prepare them for employment.

*Not Charity but a Chance” is the motto of Japan Sun Industries, with whom Omron jointly established Japan’s first factory for disabled workers.
