2005 Total Technology Fair Draws High Expectations for Technologies Driving Omron’s Growth

On October 29, the ’05 Total Technology Fair was held at Omron’s Keihanna Technology Innovation Center. Held four years after the last fair, this year’s exhibition was organized with the concept of “Sensing & Control technology for realizing the Optimization Society.” The main objective of the event was to provide a forum for Omron Group employees to discuss the technologies that will drive the future growth of Omron. Omron has traditionally been committed to cultivating new social needs through technological breakthroughs.

Despite heavy rain and unpleasant weather, the 2005 fair drew a total of 2,411 Omron Group employees. This was the largest turnout in the history of Omron’s Total Technology Fair (including the third day of OTF ’03, which targeted Omron Group employees).

The fair site was divided into different zones that showcased new technologies and products currently being developed, as well as prototypes and demonstrations. The fair encouraged active discussions among Omron employees that extended beyond the boundaries of business companies and particular fields, stimulated new ideas about customer benefits and solutions that Omron technologies can offer.

Also included were presentations of focus technologies covering subjects such as the diverse technological competencies of each business company, the Research and Development Headquarters, and Omron Healthcare (OHQ); development directions and future prospects; and programs aimed at improving technological strengths. Newly added to this year’s fair were presentations focusing on specialized tasks. All presentation and seminar sites were very crowded, with standing-room-only in some sites and people watching from outside the room at other sites. The crowds reflected the great deal of attention and expectations that Omron employees have for our technologies.

Visitors’ reactions and comments at each display zone (excerpts)

Industrial Zone
Every exhibit was a great success. The QLM (Quality Lifecycle Management) solutions displayed at the Industrial Zone were especially popular, with many commenting that the easy-to-understand display helped them gain fresh perceptions about QLM.

Manufacturing Innovation Zone
One person commented that he sensed the possibility of inspiring innovation for manufacturing by looking at Omron’s nanotechnology and other essential technologies as well as a range of core production technologies.

Key Device Zone
Demonstration areas were consistently packed with visitors, and the atmosphere was filled with active information exchanges and discussions. One attendee commented, “I was able to discover the needs of various business companies. We were also able to have valuable discussions and collect information, which can serve as a helpful reference for future technological strategies and business development.”

The “Drivers’ Support” solutions site introduced an exhibit of automotive electronics technologies and components/equipment designed to extend the possibilities of future cars. This drew an impressive response from other business companies as well.

Social and Personal Life Zone
One attendee commented, “Although I was already familiar with many products, I was able to learn a lot more by listening to detailed technical explanations from the developers.”

Upcoming e-ONR issues will include more reporting on the ’05 Total Technology Fair, including a summary of responses to questionnaires that were distributed to visitors after attending the fair, as well as technologies and presentations that attracted a great deal of attention.

A Comment from President and CEO Hisao Sakuta
This year’s fair was a great success and featured some very powerful presentations. I was especially impressed by the way that presenters confidently explained technologies they have or are developing with specific applications in mind. There were also many presentations that expressed the future vision of developers using technologies, rather than simple demonstrations. In my message last month, I urged those who were participating in the Total Technology Fair to summon the greatest possible energy and enthusiasm and ‘seize the day.’ I believe that this was achieved. During the fair, I was able to feel the enthusiasm of all Omron Group people in their desire to contribute to customers and society, as well as their confidence and ambitions for the technologies they are dealing with. I have great expectations for further progress in technological development."
